Static & Strange focuses on non-linear explorations in bass music across a wide variety of soundscapes. Vying for a sound imagined from noir-ish films, abstract theory and a protest of the scourge of hashtag activism, the label was born as a motivation to serve narratives with both audio and visual art.

Founded by Unchained co-founder, producer and label manager Lyndon Jarr, and Mike Airstrike, a long-time producer and Unchained team member, Static & Strange serves as an alternate platform for both their own output as well as that of friends and like-minded artists.

With roots in drum’n’bass, ambient, progressive tech and dubstep, the focus is on experimentation and a “voyage in sonics,” alongside an anything goes approach.

Whilst Drum’n’Bass has been one of their overarching passions since the beginning, their musical paths have deeply explored several trajectories over the years including various forms of progressive, rave, and the early downbeat/trip-hop sound. All these influences are present on the label’s forthcoming catalogue.

The label’s debut release is a two tracker.

‘Sunrise Selection’ is an uplifting jungle come atmospheric broken-techno club track. It runs at a temperature of 130bpm and at the drop is likely a bit of a club banger. ‘Little Peas’ takes the Fracture-esque, 160, 4/4 movement just a little further than where it left off a couple of years ago with progressive atmospherics and off-kilter syncopation.

We’ve found it difficult to explain what is going on with this release - but hoping for vivid explanations from our listeners!
